I live and work in Taiwan. I am an English teacher and one of the main things we teach is to say "hi". My story is about my experience with the word "hi". Many people learn to speak basic English in Taiwan. One of the first things a student learns is to say "hi". It's amazing though how few will say "hi", to a westerner or anyone else. It's ironic that most of my fellow "hi's" come from the developmental disabled people. It is so much more heart whelming and sincere then the ones I get from a student. Even when there is a language barrier. Saying hi means so much. They may not know my language but they try to to make me feel welcome in a country that is not even my own.
